  • Machine Gun Preacher Reflects on the Mother Teresa Award for Social Justice

By Sam Childers, Machine Gun Preacher I felt like I didn’t deserve the honor. Standing humbled and overwhelmed in the grand halls of The Leela in Mumbai back in 2013 to receive the Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for Social Justice, I could hardly fathom the award being given to someone like me .  I was a man with a past. My soul was scarred by sin and violence. Sure, I had been called by Christ to save children in East Africa . That man from decades before was long dead, and I was born again to carry on God’s mission. To be associated in any way with the legacy of Mother Teresa – one of the most holy and selfless individuals to ever walk this Earth – was nothing short of a miracle. It’s been over 10 years. Having spent the last quarter-century  on this crusade, a decade goes by like smoke through a keyhole. It makes sense today to reflect on what the Mother Teresa Award meant, so we don’t lose sight of the “why” behind the mission. Mother Teresa’s life was a testament to unconditional love, fierce compassion and tireless dedication to the world’s most vulnerable. She dedicated herself to the poor, the broken and the forgotten. That’s the kind of selfless devotion I aspire to every day. Receiving an award bearing her name didn’t feel like a recognition of my work — it felt like a divine reminder of the path I’ve been called to walk. From Sinner to Servant My life was once defined by violence, addiction and sin. But in 1992, God called me out of the darkness  and gave me a new purpose: to be His warrior on this Earth. I was led to East Africa, where I witnessed unimaginable horrors — children ripped from their families, forced to become soldiers or sex slaves, and living in constant fear of warlords like Joseph Kony  of the brutal Lord’s Resistance Army. I couldn’t turn my back on them. I knew then I had to rescue these defenseless children, to bring evil warlords to justice  and to give these innocent souls a chance at a better life. Angels of East Africa: A Legacy of Love & Hope Since that moment of transformation, my nonprofit organization, Angels of East Africa, has been at the forefront of this fight. The Mother Theresa Award from the Harmony Foundation in 2013 was not just a recognition of the past but a challenge to keep going, to push harder and to save more lives. In the years since, Angels of East Africa has expanded its reach and deepened its impact: Orphanages:  Our orphanages and children’s homes remain a safe haven for hundreds of children who’ve been rescued from the grips of war. Here, they are given food, shelter, medical care and — most importantly — love. Education: We’ve launched educational programs that give children the tools they need to break free from the cycle of poverty and violence. From primary schooling to job-training opportunities, these children now have the chance to dream and to build a better future. Vocational Training:  Recognizing the importance of self-sufficiency, we’ve introduced vocational training programs in agriculture, carpentry, tailoring, and other trades. These skills not only empower the children but also strengthen the communities around them. Community Support:  Our work goes beyond the orphanages. We’ve built wells for clean water, provided resources for local schools, and partnered with communities to create sustainable solutions for long-term peace and prosperity. The Fight Is Far From Over Despite these strides, the fight is far from over. Thousands of children are still trapped in a nightmare of violence and exploitation. Warlords like Kony may have faded from the headlines, but their legacy of terror lingers. Every day, I feel the weight of the mission God has placed on my heart — to rescue the lost, to protect the innocent and to stand as a barrier against the forces of evil . As I look back on the moment I received the Mother Teresa Award, I am reminded that this fight is not about me. The mission didn’t culminate in that moment. It was only a mile-marker on the greater journey.  It’s about the children. It’s about ensuring they have a future filled with hope instead of despair. It’s about being God’s hands and feet on this Earth, even in the darkest places. Remembering Mother Teresa’s Mission Mother Teresa once said, “If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.” Her words echo in my heart as I continue this mission delivering children to safety and rebuilding shattered lives .  We DO  belong to each other, and the children of East Africa need us now more than ever. To everyone who has supported Angels of East Africa  over the years, THANK YOU! Your prayers, donations and encouragement fuel this mission. And to those who feel called to join us, there’s always room for more warriors in this fight.

  • War’s Lasting Psychological Toll on East Africa's Children of Conflict

By Sam Childers, Machine Gun Preacher I’m no psychiatrist. I’m a simple man. I prefer to take action and get my hands dirty – and I’ve been known to get in a fight or two. (Now I get into fights for good , rescuing children from East African warzones.) It doesn’t take a professional shrink to understand the psychological toll war has taken on these poor kids.  Many wear the physical scars of war . They’ve been shot. They’ve been burned. They’ve had limbs torn from their sockets. Some have been torn from their families – or forced to watch them killed. The psychological effects, for most, never fully heal.  These are unimaginable horrors. Unfortunately, that’s not even half of it. In my 25 years of saving and rehabilitating children  from evil warlords in East Africa, I’ve witnessed things no child should EVER  endure.  Children rescued from sex-traffickers and terror-driven militias literally quake with fear. Being physically removed from harm’s way is only part of the journey. After years of violence, displacement and unthinkable trauma, these children face a lasting internal battle that lingers long after the guns go silent. In the interest of building awareness for this ongoing fight , I do my best here to break down what I’ve seen of these psychological impacts. Children of Conflict: The Psychological Scars of War in East Africa Children who have lived through conflict zones bear scars we often cannot see. Those who were forced to be soldiers or child “brides,” carry memories that haunt them day and night. These children have seen and experienced things that defy description. As I’ve said before, we’ve been introduced to the Devil himself . For a young mind, such trauma is deeply destabilizing. That’s an understatement. Many of the kids in our orphanages  grow up experiencing feelings of guilt, shame and anger. They struggle with nightmares, flashbacks and severe anxiety.  This impacts their ability to form healthy relationships, focus in school and envision any kind of future for themselves. How Trauma Manifests in Children For the children we rescue, the trauma of war shows up in unpredictable and intense ways . Some become withdrawn, isolating themselves from others to protect themselves. Others lash out, expressing anger as the only defense mechanism they know.  Emotional regulation, trust and the ability to experience joy are all deeply affected.  Without intervention, the impact of these traumas can grow and worsen over time. Young children regress in their behavior. They can’t manage emotions or even perform basic tasks. Teens typically feel hopelessness, loss and a deep-seated anger toward the world.  The Role of Angels of East Africa in Trauma Healing Angels of East Africa exists not only to physically protect these children, but also to walk alongside them as they heal emotionally. We help children reclaim their sense of self, trust and hope.  Here's how we approach this critical aspect of their journey: 1. Trauma-Informed Counseling Trained counselors are key to helping children face and understand and process their trauma. Our team uses professionals who specialize in trauma-informed therapy, especially for children who have suffered through war. We provide safe spaces where children can talk about their experiences without judgment, learn to manage their emotions and form healthy coping mechanisms. Through both individual and group therapy sessions, these children have the opportunity to share their stories with peers who understand their pain. By forming these connections, they realize they’re not alone in their suffering.  This builds a sense of community. 2. Education & Routine: Reclaiming a Sense of Normalcy One of the most powerful tools in trauma recovery providing structure, routine and educational opportunities. For children who’ve lived in war-torn chaos, something as simple as attending school or following a daily schedule can be transformative. Education offers not just knowledge but a chance to dream of something better. Through Angels of East Africa, children have access to classrooms where they learn everything from reading and math to vocational skills . Every time a child excels in school, they take a step away from the trauma that once held them captive. 3. Building Trust Through Community Support Healing is impossible without trust. That’s something we work hard to rebuild. Many of the children we rescue have lost trust in adults. Who could blame them? Our team understands that trust must be earned slowly. By keeping our promises, showing up consistently and offering a stable environment, we help these children rebuild their faith in others. We foster this sense of community through group activities, mentorship programs and safe spaces where children can form friendships. 4. Faith & Spiritual Healing We obviously believe in the healing power of faith. The Lord gave me, a sinner, a shot at redemption . Our kids deserve nothing less.  While everyone’s journey is different, children typically find solace in spirituality, which becomes a source of inner strength. Christian faith is a framework to make sense of suffering – an understanding that even amidst their pain, there is a purpose. Our team offers spiritual guidance without pressure, allowing each child to come to their beliefs on their own terms.  The Road Ahead: A Lifelong Commitment to Healing Psychological Trauma The worst of the fighting here in East Africa is over. But my rifle and sidearm are always at the ready to protect defenseless children. I’ll always vow justice against evil warlords  and rebel militias that turned peaceful villages into Hell on Earth. Healing from trauma is not a quick or easy process. It takes years of care within a consistently supportive environment. While we may never be able to erase the pain these children have endured, we can help them build resilience, find inner peace and create a future free from the psychological shackles of their lived experience. We’re always reminded that our mission is as critical now as it was 25 years ago. Your donation today  will help us to fight this ongoing battle.

  • Rebuilding Shattered Lives for Children in East African Warzones

By Sam Childers, Machine Gun Preacher I know a little something about shattered lives. When I was at my worst in terms of drug addiction and violence, I didn’t even know my own life had been shattered. But I wasn’t beyond redemption . For thousands of innocent children we’ve rescued  from East African warzones, whose own lives were shattered not by choice, the Lord’s mercy is even better deserved. For over 25 years , I’ve witnessed the devastation that warlords and their brainwashed rebels militias bring to East African families. I’ve seen firsthand how these brutal forces target communities, tearing families apart and leaving children to fend for themselves in an unforgiving world.  AND WORSE! The children who survive these attacks face unimaginable traumas , often losing not just their homes but their entire support systems. Growing up in one of the most impoverished and undeveloped areas in the world, their chances for a fruitful life weren’t that great to begin with. These are the children Angels of East Africa fights to rescue, protect and give a second chance at life beyond the pain. The Warlords’ Strategy: Divide & Destroy Divide and destroy. Divide and conquer. It’s a military strategy. It’s a recipe for destruction.  The only thing left for us to consider – a question I’ve asked myself for decades – is WHY? Turns out, there’s no reason behind Satan’s madness. While fighting these warlords, I’ve looked into their eyes and found only evil .   It’s evil for the sake of evil.  They use a ruthless strategy to weaken communities: break the family bond . By targeting the heads of households, these groups strip children of their protectors, creating a generation left without parents, siblings or any semblance of stability. Families are the first line of defense for these children. Without them, they become vulnerable targets for recruitment, exploitation and abuse. It’s been common for entire East African villages to be destroyed in a single night. Adults are often killed or taken as prisoners. This leaves children as unprotected, traumatized witnesses to unimaginable violence. When the dust settles, the only thing left behind are shattered homes and the broken souls of young children forced to survive alone. In the worst-case scenarios, children themselves are abducted and forced into becoming soldiers or sex slaves. We’ll never stop telling these stories  to open hearts and minds to the fact that true evil still exists in this world. The Impact on Children Left Behind For many of these children, survival becomes a daily battle. Here are some of the realities they face: 1. Orphaned & Alone In the aftermath, many children find themselves orphaned – without a single family member to turn to. This isolation is crushing in a society where family and community mean everything. These are the ones who were fortunate enough not to be captured and forced to fight alongside rebel militias or subjected to sexual slavery.  Orphaned children are often forced to live on the streets, scavenging for food, shelter and some sense of security. Some may be lucky enough to find refuge with distant relatives or friends, but more often than not, they are left to fight for survival (while other kids their age are safe at home playing with dolls) . 2. Separated & Desperate Kids separated from their families during attacks watch in horror as their parents are killed or be driven away to escape with only the clothes on their backs. (Some children have even been forced to kill their parents themselves – or be killed!)   Those who are left behind or lucky enough to escape are left wandering, desperately searching for any familiar face. The separation from family can be just as traumatic as losing them outright, leaving a lasting sense of loss, grief and confusion. 3. Forced into Survival Mode With no support system these children enter a brutal survival mode, often joining other children in dangerous makeshift camps or seeking work in nearby towns. Some are forced to beg or even turn to petty crime just to eat, while others fall prey to human traffickers or stolen away by the same warlords who tore their families apart.  These children are forced to grow up quickly, but they are robbed of the chance to experience a true childhood. Why Conflict-Driven Family Separation Matters The trauma of losing a family  impacts children in every conceivable way. These children face many psychological, emotional and physical challenges, which almost always leads to lasting damage if not addressed.  Today, we’re looking at more than an entire generation affected, causing the social fabric to fray and damage to continue rippling outward. Children who grow up without family also lose access to cultural traditions, stories and knowledge. Survival isn’t just about food and shelter but about finding a reason to keep moving forward. Angels of East Africa: Rebuilding Hope & Family At Angels of East Africa, we aim to give these children a chance to reclaim some of what was so frightfully stolen away. It takes a village to raise a child, and our orphanages across Sudan and Uganda  have become that village for hundreds of children across East Africa.  Here’s how we are helping to heal broken families and provide a path forward for vulnerable children : 1. Creating a New Family Environment Nothing can truly replace a child’s biological family. However, Angels of East Africa creates a community where children can experience love, stability and security. Our orphanages are not just shelters, but are designed to function as homes, where every child feels valued and understood.  They live in a structured environment, go to school, and share meals together — experiencing the warmth and guidance of caregivers who genuinely care about them. 2. Psychological Support & Trauma Healing Children who’ve been through the trauma of losing their family need more than just a roof over their heads. They need to heal from the inside out . We provide access to trained counselors and social workers who offer one-on-one and group therapy sessions to help these children process their grief and build resilience. We offer a safe space where they can talk about their pain, begin to understand it and eventually let go of some of it. 3. Education & Life Skills Training Education is the ultimate form of empowerment. Angels of East Africa prioritizes giving each child a quality education for a brighter future. In addition to academic education, we provide life skills training, teaching these young people how to take care of themselves and navigate the world around them. For teenagers and young adults, we offer vocational training, preparing them to find jobs and contribute to society. We must equip them with the skills and self-confidence they need to break free from the cycle of poverty and violence that claimed their families. 4. Reunification Efforts Unfortunately, this isn’t possible nearly as often as we’d like it to be. Angels of East Africa works to reunite children with extended family members, if they can be found. We attempt to trace distant relatives and assess whether the environment is safe for a child’s return.  When reunification is feasible, we support the family unit and help the child transition back into a loving home environment. If reunification is not possible, we ensure that every child knows they have a place  within our community and that Angels of East Africa is their home for as long as they need it. A Call to Action: Standing Against the Cycle of Conflict The reason I came to East Africa after accepting Christ is I couldn’t stand by and watch these children face the horrors of war alone.  But we can’t do this alone. We need the support of people worldwide who believe that every child deserves a shot at life beyond survival.  Click here to make a tax-deductible donation . • From Guns to Gardens: The Role of Agricultural Education in Rebuilding War-Torn Communities

By Sam Childers, Machine Gun Preacher For decades, I’ve been in the trenches of East Africa, fighting to rescue children  and give them hope for a future free from violence. The things they’ve seen. The things they’ve witnessed and been forced to participate in. If you could see it first-hand, you’d wonder how Satan has gained such a strong foothold  in our world. While the immediate need has always been to pull these kids out of danger, the long-term challenge is equally important: helping them find their purpose and independence so they can heal and build strong communities.  As a former sinner who’s been given a shot at redemption  in the eyes of the Lord, I feel it’s only fair these innocents have that same chance. It’s one thing to rescue a child from conflict, but it’s something else to give them the skills they need to thrive. That’s where agricultural education comes in  to help this still-developing corner of the globe. Healing the Scars of War with Agricultural Education Through Angels of East Africa, we’ve seen firsthand how teaching children and teens about farming, animal care and self-sustenance doesn’t just fill empty stomachs. It helps plant the seeds of a stable, hopeful future. These skills help young people learn  to contribute meaningfully to their communities, secure food for themselves and their families, and even rebuild the economies ravaged by war.  Our journey from “guns to gardens” represents a powerful shift in how we empower the next generation – after being plucked from the clutches of ruthless warlords – to stand strong and be self-sufficient. Why Agricultural Education? In the communities we serve across Uganda, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, poverty and hunger are some of the only certainties in life. We know poverty in America, but our realities are often considered privileged in comparison .  Many families struggle to meet their basic needs. Land and resources are available, but skills, knowledge and tools for sustainable agriculture are lacking. Some of the most brutal examples of guerrilla warfare the world has ever seen have disrupted life for decades.  As the dust settles, agricultural education fills gaps for East African children. These young people not only grow crops, but also learn life skills that are essential for personal and community resilience. Agriculture is more than just farming. It’s a means of survival, a path to self-reliance and a way to heal communities. We’re giving them a way to take ownership of their future, a foundation to build upon, and a sense of pride and purpose. Planting Seeds of Change: Our Programs in Agricultural Education At Angels of East Africa, we’ve developed programs that combine practical agricultural training with values of self-sufficiency and community cooperation. We run several initiatives in our centers that not only provide food security, but also help children gain independence and confidence in their abilities to create positive change. 1. Hands-On Farming Training We’re proud of our small-scale farms across East Africa, where rescued children and teens learn to plant, grow and harvest crops. Under the guidance of trained agricultural mentors, they gain hands-on experience with soil preparation, planting, watering and crop management.  Each child learns the cycle of farming. Our kids learn that they can be agents of change.  2. Livestock Care & Animal Husbandry By learning to care for chickens, goats and other livestock, children understand the importance of animal welfare and responsible caretaking. This experience also prepares them to raise livestock as a source of income and food. This gives these kids a newfound sense of responsibility and empathy. They learn that all God’s creatures need care, love, and a safe environment to grow and thrive. 3. Sustainable Farming Practices Sustainable farming practices are essential for long-term success in regions where resources are scarce. We teach techniques such as crop rotation, composting, well drilling and water conservation . We emphasize the value of preserving the environment and minimize the depletion of natural resources. Instead, they contribute to the land's fertility, helping the soil and local ecosystems thrive. When they return to their communities, they become ambassadors of sustainable living. 4. Farm-to-Table Lessons It’s important for these young people to see the direct connection between the farm and their everyday lives. Our programs include farm-to-table lessons that show children how to harvest, prepare, and cook the food they’ve grown. They learn about nutrition, food preservation and the importance of healthy meals.  Cooking and sharing meals together also strengthens bonds among the children, creating a sense of family and community.  5. Supporting Local Economies Our agricultural programs also emphasize the potential of farming as a financial tool. For older children and teenagers, we provide training on basic market economics, teaching them how they could sell surplus crops or livestock to generate income. They learn essential business skills such as budgeting, planning and record-keeping, which can help them achieve financial independence and contribute to the local economy. In war-torn regions, every dollar matters. We empower them to help lift themselves and their families out of poverty. Why This Matters for East Africa’s Future The impact of agricultural education reaches beyond the farm. When we teach these children to grow food, we’re also showing them the value of hard work, patience and perseverance. These are the qualities they need to overcome the trauma of their past and to build better futures for themselves and their communities. Our agricultural programs at Angels of East Africa have already transformed lives, but there’s still so much work to be done. Many of the children who come to us have been conditioned to think only about surviving from one day to the next. Through these programs, they begin to dream about more than just survival.  They begin to imagine lives where they can contribute to their communities, support their families, and live with purpose and dignity. Join Angels of East Africa in Rebuilding from the Ground Up The journey from “guns to gardens” isn’t easy, but it’s a journey worth taking. Angels of East Africa is committed to continuing this work , but we can’t do it alone. We need the support of people around the world who believe in the power of knowledge, resilience and self-determination.  Click here to donate today !

  • Battling the Devil Himself: The Tragedy of Warfare Demands Action

By Sam Childers, “The Machine Gun Preacher” I’ve met the Devil, in the flesh and in the spirit. I’ve met him with a needle in my arm. I’ve met him while pulling children away from fighting men with rifles in burning villages clinging to their bounty of innocent children. He’s an enemy with many faces.  “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the Devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”  – 1 Peter 5:8 At our raids in East Africa to rescue those children , I’ve looked the Devil in the eyes of militants using the kids for Lord knows what. The men – blank hatred in their eyes influenced by Hell itself – don’t hesitate to use deadly force to keep their captives.   I’ve spent over 25 years in the heart of some of the darkest places on this Earth. If there’s one thing I know for certain, it’s this: evil is real. We recently released a new documentary – “ Never Stop: 25 Years a Missionary or a Mercenary ” – to support fighting that evil with Angels of East Africa . ‘Evil is Real & We Must Rise Against It’ It’s not just their eyes. You can see Satan in the destruction rebel militias leave in their wake  in places like Uganda, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The broken bodies. The broken souls. The shattered lives. Because evil is real, we have no choice but to rise against it.  What fuels us to keep fighting despite the danger, the sleepless nights and the constant weight on our shoulders? I’ll tell you plain and simple: it’s faith in God. Christ died on the cross to teach us that evil CAN  be defeated. By accepting Christ into your heart, Satan and his minions have no power against you. Through Christ, I have the strength to stand up against it, no matter how dark it gets.  Faith That Fights Back People sometimes ask me, “How can you still believe in God when you’ve seen so much evil?” And to that, I always answer, “How could I not?” If there’s ever a reason for faith, it’s the obvious presence of evil. When you face the horrors of war — children forced to kill, young girls stolen into sexual slavery, entire villages wiped off the map — you need something stronger than fear to keep you moving forward.  I didn’t grow up in the church, and I didn’t live a life of righteousness from the start. As a younger man, I was lost in a world of violence, drugs and everything you can imagine. I used my friendship with some of the clubs (hardline biker 1%ER gangs) to live recklessly. I was not just a tough guy – I was the meanest of the mean you could ever imagine. I'd take to someone with a baseball bat for a stupid comment. But everything changed when I accepted Jesus into my life in 1992. I didn’t just experience a new sense of peace. I felt a fire ignite within me . That fire told me I was meant to do something bigger than myself. And for me, that “something” was helping the most vulnerable children of East Africa. Battling Evil With Love & Justice “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.”  – James 2:26 Faith without action isn’t faith at all. It’s just talk. This verse has stuck with me through all the years I’ve been fighting to save these kids.  It’s not enough to just say we believe in justice or to pray for peace. We have to act. Faith in action means putting ourselves on the line, risking everything to be God’s hands and feet in this broken world. That’s why I’ve picked up a rifle when necessary, why I’ve driven into the heart of conflict zones, and why I’ve faced down warlords and their armies.  Because sometimes, doing the right thing means being ready to die while fighting fire with fire. You can’t face evil with a kind smile. You have to confront it head-on. Warlords – militia leaders like Joseph Kony  – are doing the devil’s work. They’re spreading terror, enslaving children and inflicting suffering on the most innocent among us.  If that’s not the work of Satan himself, I don’t know what is. But I also know that God has called me to stand in the way. The Power of Redemption Redemption is the core of my faith. I know what it’s like to be lost, to be caught in a cycle of sin and destruction. But I also know what it’s like to be redeemed, to have my life turned around by the grace of God. That’s why I believe in fighting for these children — not just to save their bodies from the horrors of war, but to save their souls from the trauma evil causes.  At our East African orphanages and homes , every child we rescue is given more than just a safe place to sleep. We offer them love, community and the opportunity to heal.  So many of them have deep physical and emotional wounds. They deserve a redemption story on their own terms. We’ve set up schools and training centers  because education and skills are the tools these children need to rebuild their lives.  Most importantly, we teach them about the love of Christ. For many of these kids, the idea that someone loves them unconditionally is brand new. These are God’s children. In the end, good will win. Love will prevail. The horrors of war will not have the final word.

  • The Horrors of War: Devastation in the Lives of East African Children

By Sam Childers, “The Machine Gun Preacher” There once was a time I would’ve never imagined being in an honest-to-God warzone. My life was a warzone enough – addiction, violence and chaos were my closest friends. Then in the late 1990s, as a born-again Christian, I came to East Africa and found the REAL  war. The children. Oh, my dear God, the children. What they had experienced at the hands of brutal warlords was unthinkable. It was unconscionable. I HAD  to do something. I thought I had seen the worst the world has to offer. But nothing can prepare you for the devastating impact war has on the innocent.  Thankfully, alongside my nonprofit, Angels of East Africa, we’ve been able to rescue and rehabilitate thousands of children  in Uganda, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  By purchasing my new documentary – “ Never Stop: 25 Years a Missionary or a Mercenary ” – you’re directly supporting this mission. For those who are unfamiliar, let’s get a grip on why this is important. War is No Place for Children Especially guerrilla warfare. These kids, barely old enough to understand what’s happening around them, are thrust into a nightmare that no child should ever have to live through. The physical, emotional and psychological scars of war leave a mark on them that’s far deeper than anything I could ever describe in words.  I’m still going to try because the world needs to know. At our orphanages , we see this every day. Are these children capable of healing after seeing what they’ve seen, doing what they’ve done and experiencing what they’ve experienced? Absolutely. But the path is long.  Here’s why. The Physical Scars: Visible Reminders of Pain Imagine being just 7 or 8 years old – or younger – and seeing your entire village burned to the ground. This is the horrifying reality for so many children across wartorn East Africa. Some children barely escape with their lives themselves, caught in the crossfire with burns, gunshot wounds, broken bones and worse.   When I first arrived here, I was hit with the brutal reality of what these children endure. Many of the kids we rescue bear deep, painful reminders of the violence they've survived. I’ve held children missing limbs, their bodies burned, their faces disfigured by the cruelty of war.  Some are scarred by bullets, others by machetes, and some from the bombings that level their homes.  For them, pain isn’t a one-time event. It’s a constant companion; a part of their existence. These physical scars often never fully heal. We’ve seen children who’ve lost arms or legs because they refused to follow the commands of warlords, or were simply caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Others are malnourished, their tiny bodies weak from years of not having enough to eat.  Medical care in war zones is scarce. These children often need months — sometimes years — of physical rehabilitation. The Emotional Scars: A Life Shattered While the physical scars are heartbreaking, the emotional scars these children carry are even more devastating. These kids have witnessed atrocities no person should ever see, much less a child. Imagine losing your family in an instant or, even worse, being forced at gunpoint to kill them yourself.  Some have been abducted from their homes in the middle of the night by rebel militias like the Lord’s Resistance Army, led by the evil Joseph Kony . They've been torn from their families and forced into lives of unimaginable horror.  Boys are turned into child soldiers, given guns and told to kill – or be killed. Many of them are forced to kill their own parents or siblings to ensure their loyalty. I’ve met boys who, after being rescued, have wept in my arms because of the guilt and shame they carry from being forced to commit these atrocities. The girls face horrors of their own. Many of them had been kidnapped and forced into sexual slavery, enduring abuse day after day. Some of them have seen their friends and sisters killed for trying to escape. When we bring them to safety, they’re broken. They can’t trust anyone. They don’t know how to feel safe anymore. These children may smile, laugh and try to play like normal kids again. but deep down, the emotional toll remains.  You can see it in their eyes, in the way they flinch at loud sounds or shy away from touch. Their innocence has been stolen. The Psychological Scars: A Battle That Never Ends The psychological scars are the ones that often last the longest. War has a way of embedding itself into the minds of grown men. Imagine the psychological impact it would have on innocent children. Even after they’re rescued, even after they’re safe, many of them struggle with the trauma of their past experiences. I’ve comforted children who wake up in the middle of the night screaming, plagued by nightmares reliving the horrors they’ve witnessed. Every. Single. Night. Others have flashbacks, triggered by the sight of soldiers or the sound of helicopters overhead.  PTSD is a very  real thing. The tricky thing about mental wounds is that they’re invisible. Treatment? Best left to the professionals. We work tirelessly at Angels of East Africa to provide psychological support for these children. We give them counseling, therapy and, most importantly, love. But even with all the help in the world, the road to recovery is long.  These kids have had their entire worldview shaped by violence and fear, and it takes years to undo that kind of damage. The Hope for Healing: A New Future for the Children of East Africa Despite all the pain these children have gone through, there is hope. Every child we rescue is a life saved, a future that has a chance to flourish. At Angels of East Africa, we don’t just rescue these kids from war zones — we help them rebuild their lives. We give them a home, an education, and most importantly, a community where they can feel safe again. This mission isn’t just mine. It’s ours. Will you support us ?

  • Machine Gun Preacher’s Shot at Redemption: A Journey from Violence to Victory

Rewind a few decades and meet the Machine Gun Preacher before he became Machine Gun Preacher. Sam Childers was a drug-peddling biker-gang member near Pittsburgh, Pa. – a man who by outward appearances did not deserve a shot at redemption.  But God doesn’t work that way.  God often uses the most damaged vessels to deliver the most heroic change. In this case, a profound faith transformation compelled Sam Childers to war-torn regions of East Africa . He was chosen by God to fight a war to rescue children  from the most unimaginable horrors.  He’s waged that war alongside his nonprofit organization, Angels of East Africa, for over 25 years. He’s risked his life to bring kids to safety and bring brutal warlord criminals to justice.    For Sam Childers, life has always been a battle. That battle is now chronicled like never before in another new documentary, “ Never Stop: 25 Years a Missionary or a Mercenary .” The Evolution of Machine Gun Preacher: Faith & Redemption in East Africa Childers became the Machine Gun Preacher because he recognized the need to act. Thousands of children and teenagers were being abducted from their families by rebel militias. As if the guerrilla warfare in regions of Sudan, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo weren’t enough, children were being forced to become soldiers and sex slaves. Now he’s 62. The Machine Gun Preacher is an aging man, worn by the physical and emotional toll of his life’s work. But in serving the Lord, he musters enough energy and his rifle shoots true enough to keep fighting for the defenseless.  The enemy? Warlords like Joseph Kony , leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), have no sympathy for the countless people they’ve destroyed. But what truly drives him isn’t the adrenaline of combat or the cause of justice. It’s a deep, personal journey of redemption for himself and the people he loves. A Life on the Edge: From Biker Gangs to Breaking Chains Long before the Machine Gun Preacher was rescuing children from warzones, he lived a very different life — a life that teetered on the edge of destruction. Growing up in a small Pennsylvania town, Childers found himself drawn to the dangerous lifestyle of biker gangs. His days were filled with violence, drug dealing and chaos, earning him a reputation as a hardened criminal with little regard for the future.  Fueled by drugs and a relentless hunger for power, Childers’ path seemed destined for an early grave. “I wasn’t just a man running wild,” Machine Gun Preacher has said of his early years. “I was a man lost, with no purpose, no direction. I didn’t care if I lived or died.” For many like him, the story might have ended there. But something extraordinary happened that would forever alter the course of his life: Childers found Christ.  In 1992, at the lowest point in his life, he experienced a profound conversion to Christianity. It wasn’t an easy or instant transformation, but for the first time, he felt the tug of something greater: a calling to leave behind the violence and destruction of his past and pursue a higher purpose. The Call to East Africa: From Guns to Glory Following his conversion, Childers began attending church and seeking ways to serve. But it wasn’t long before his calling became clear: he was meant to go to Africa. In the late 1990s, Childers made his first trip to Sudan, where he witnessed firsthand the horrors being inflicted on children by evil militias like the LRA. It was there, in the heart of a war-torn land, that Childers’ mission was born. The atrocities he saw changed him forever. Children were being abducted – forced to fight as soldiers or sold into sexual slavery. Villages were being burned to the ground, and families were torn apart. The violence was relentless, and the need for intervention was urgent. “I couldn’t just stand by and do nothing,” the Machine Gun Preacher said. “These children were being brutalized. I had a choice: either go back to my life and forget what I saw, or stay and fight for their lives.” Childers chose to stay. Armed with both his faith and a machine gun, he founded Angels of East Africa, a nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and caring for children  caught in the crossfire of war. His mission became twofold: to fight against the evil of warlords like Kony and to rebuild the lives of the children left in their wake. A Fighter’s Redemption: ‘I Don’t Run From Danger’ The same man who once peddled drugs and rode with biker gangs now found himself standing on the frontlines of a much greater battle. The guns were still there, but now they were in the service of protecting the innocent. “I don’t run from danger,” Childers says. “I run toward it. If that’s what it takes to save these kids, then so be it. Sometimes we have to fight fire with fire. If I die, I served God well.” Over the years, Angels of East Africa has saved hundreds of children, providing them with not only safety but also education, vocational training and a chance to rebuild their lives . Machine Gun Preacher has led countless rescue missions, often going deep into rebel-held territories, risking his life to save children who have been abandoned by the world. The Mother Teresa Award: Honoring a Saved Man In 2013, Sam Childers became the only American to receive the prestigious Mother Teresa Award for Social Justice . This honor, awarded to individuals who have made a profound impact on humanitarian work, is a testament to the depth of the Machine Gun Preacher’s commitment. For a man who once lived a life of violence and chaos, receiving an award in the name of Mother Teresa, a beacon of peace and compassion, marked a turning point in his journey. “For me, the Mother Teresa Award is not just a recognition of the work we’ve done,” Machine Gun Preacher said. “It’s a symbol of how far God’s grace can take you. If someone like me can turn their life around and help others, then anyone can.” The award is a recognition of the thousands of lives Childers has impacted — not just the children he’s saved from war, but also the communities he’s helped rebuild. It’s a reminder that redemption is possible for anyone, no matter how dark their past may be. Machine Gun Preacher: A Lifetime of Service, A Legacy of Hope Today, Childers continues his work with Angels of East Africa, though the years of fighting have taken their toll. His face is lined with the weariness of a man who has seen too much violence, too much suffering. But despite the exhaustion, his resolve remains unshaken. He continues to lead missions into some of the most dangerous areas of East Africa, knowing that the fight is far from over. “I’m not done yet,” Childers says. “There are still too many children out there who need our help. As long as I have breath, I’ll keep fighting.” Childers’ story is one of transformation — from a life of destruction to one of purpose, from a man lost in violence to a man driven by faith and compassion.  His mission is more than just a fight against warlords. It’s a fight for his own soul and the souls of the children he rescues.  By supporting Angels of East Africa and watching the new Machine Gun Preacher documentary, you’re directly supporting Childers’ ongoing mission. By standing with the Machine Gun Preacher, you’re helping to ensure that his legacy of hope and redemption continues for generations to come.

  • The Lingering Scars of War: How Angels of East Africa is Healing Children’s Hearts & Minds

Look around our orphanages in East Africa  and you’ll see evidence of God’s love and mercy everywhere. Angels of East Africa and our fearless leader, the Machine Gun Preacher, have rescued thousands of children from the horrors of war. But even though they’ve been delivered to safety, they’ll always carry the lingering scars of war.  These scars are both physical and emotional . Little boys who were forced by rebel militias to kill their own families. Little girls who became sex slaves to brutal soldiers. Missing limbs, burn scars, gunshot wounds. The list goes on.   From experience, we know that in the war-ravaged regions of East Africa, the impact of conflict doesn’t end when the fighting stops. For many children in Sudan, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the scars of war will follow them for the rest of their lives. We’re not just saving lives; we’re rebuilding them.  Our mission goes beyond offering shelter and safety — it’s about helping children heal from the horrors they’ve witnessed and experienced, restoring their hope for the future. That’s why it’s critical that supporters contribute to the Machine Gun Preacher mission by purchasing the new documentary, “ Never Stop: 25 Years a Missionary or a Mercenary .” Machine Gun Preacher Assesses the Weight of War on Innocent Shoulders The children rescued by Machine Gun Preacher come to our care from some of the most dangerous and volatile areas of East Africa. These warzones today are charred remnants where communities of families once lived in peace, now riddled with bullet holes and explosion craters.  Kids plucked from their houses will remember only the fire and bloodshed during midnight raids that was just the start of a hellish journey to come.  Armed conflict and war crimes by rebel militias like Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA)  have ravaged their home communities. Many who survived will never return – because there’s nothing left to return home to. “Many of these children have been kidnapped from their homes, forced to fight as child soldiers, or endured unspeakable abuse as sex slaves,” says the Machine Gun Preacher, Sam Childers. “The physical scars of war may be visible in their injuries — missing limbs, burn marks and other permanent damage — but the emotional scars run much deeper. “Imagine being a child, torn from your family, forced to commit violent acts and living every day in fear. The trauma doesn’t end when the child is rescued. It’s something they carry with them for years; sometimes for life.” For over a quarter-century, Machine Gun Preacher has risked his life leading counterterrorist teams into rebel strongholds to rescue the children . Sam Childers has vowed justice against the evil warlords who for so long have perpetuated this violence. The Power of Love and Support for Healing the Scars of War The new Machine Gun Preacher documentary matters now more than ever, as a mechanism for fundraising and raising awareness for the ongoing fight. At Angels of East Africa, we understand that healing from war is a long journey.  Our staff – many of whom are survivors of violence themselves – provide not just physical care but also emotional and psychological support. Through counseling, group therapy and one-on-one mentorship, we help these children process their trauma and rebuild their trust in others. The scars of war often manifest as anxiety, depression, nightmares and difficulty trusting adults. But with the right care and attention, these children and teens can begin to heal. Our goal is to provide them with safe environments where they can rediscover what it means to be a child again — where laughter, learning and play replace fear and survival. Rehabilitating Physical Scars: Restoring Bodies and Spirits For some of the children in our care, the physical scars of war are a daily reminder of what they’ve endured. Some have lost limbs in bombings or landmine explosions, while others bear severe burns and bullet wounds from attacks on their villages.  These injuries are not just painful. They also serve as a constant barrier to the child’s sense of normalcy. Angels of East Africa works closely with medical professionals and rehabilitation specialists to provide the necessary treatments and surgeries to restore as much physical function as possible. We also facilitate access to prosthetic limbs and physical therapy to help children regain mobility.  But our work doesn’t stop there. We know that physical recovery is deeply tied to emotional well-being. We ensure that each child receives the holistic care needed to overcome both visible and invisible wounds. (Which segues nicely to the next point.)  Education & Empowerment: Building a Future Beyond War While the scars of war may never fully fade, the children in our care are resilient. They have the strength to not only survive, but also to thrive. Through education, vocational training and life-skills programs , Machine Gun Preacher gives them the tools to build a future free from the cycle of violence. Angels of East Africa’s schools and vocational centers provide children with opportunities to learn and grow, to imagine a life beyond conflict. Whether they aspire to become teachers, doctors, farmers or entrepreneurs, we support their dreams and help them turn their ambitions into reality. Education is the key to breaking the chains of poverty and violence in these war-torn regions. At Angels of East Africa, we’re committed to empowering every child in our care to reach their full potential. Your Support Makes Healing Possible in Healing the Scars of War in East Africa The work we do at Angels of East Africa is only possible with the support of people like you . By purchasing and downloading our latest documentary, “Never Stop – 25 Years a Missionary or a Mercenary,” you are directly contributing to the care and rehabilitation of children who have survived unimaginable horrors. Every dollar raised from the documentary goes toward providing shelter, education, medical care and emotional healing for the children in our orphanages. Your support helps us give these children the future they deserve — a future full of hope, free from the scars of war. By supporting our mission, you are helping to restore hope and dignity to the youngest victims of war – kids who never asked to be raised in such a violent world. Together, we can build a world where no child has to suffer the devastating effects of conflict, and every child has the opportunity to live a joyful and meaningful life.

They’re forced into sexual slavery. Kony is still at large , wanted by the International Criminal Court for 36 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Numerous terror organizations aligned with him continue to wreak havoc in the region.  Thousands of children remain in grave danger, and countless others — even those who’ve been rescued — need ongoing support to rebuild their lives. “The fight goes on,” Childers said. “We’ve saved hundreds, but there are so many more who need us. And it’s not just about rescuing them from the battlefield. We need to help them build happy, fulfilling lives after the dust settles.” A Life-Saving Mission You Can Be Part Of Here’s where you come in. From his troubled past to his religious conversion in 1992, the documentary explores the roots of Childers’ relentless dedication to saving children in East Africa. • Machine Gun Preacher Vows Justice Against Evil Warlords in East Africa

New Documentary Revisits Sam Childers’ Ongoing Fight to Save Africa's War-Torn Children The highly anticipated documentary “ Never Stop – 25 Years a Missionary or a Mercenary ” was released in August. This gripping new film follows the remarkable and harrowing journey of Sam Childers, famously known as the Machine Gun Preacher, as he confronts some of the world’s most ruthless warlords in East Africa. The Machine Gun Preacher vows justice against men like Joseph Kony , leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army , who is responsible for abducting thousands of children. Once taken, the girls are traditionally forced into sexual slavery while the boys are indoctrinated to become child soldiers.  Alongside his nonprofit, Angels of East Africa, Sam has rescued hundreds of these children from the evil clutches of rebel militias. But thousands more remain captive. This new Machine Gun Preacher documentary recaps the last quarter-century of that mission and reiterates his commitment to NEVER STOP until the last child is delivered to safety. Machine Gun Preacher’s Commitment: Rescuing Children from the Crossfire of Guerrilla Warfare Kony, the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), is responsible for unthinkable crimes : mass murder, child abduction, sexual slavery, forced conscription and human trafficking. He is wanted by the International Criminal Court on 36 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Those charges hardly scratch the surface of his Satanic brutality. His reign of terror has devastated countless families across Sudan, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. For the past 25 years, the Machine Gun Preacher has been charged by God to bring warlords like Kony to justice. Childers, armed with both faith and an AK-47, has spent years rescuing children from Kony’s rebel forces, risking his life to save others from the unimaginable horrors of war. With the release of “Never Stop: 25 Years a Missionary or a Mercenary,” audiences get a closer look at the Machine Gun Preacher’s life-saving work and his relentless pursuit of redemption in many different forms. Bringing Justice to a Brutal Warlord “Kony is out there somewhere. We’ve been hunting him for years,” said Childers, his voice resolute as he speaks from the brush of East Africa, fresh from another skirmish with rebel militias. “As far as I’m concerned, he’s wanted dead or alive. I’ll bring him to the Lord — or I’ll send him there. His choice.” These aren’t just words. For decades, the Machine Gun Preacher has been on the front lines, fighting to bring an end to the reign of militia terror. Rebel leaders like Kony continue to evade capture. Guerrilla forces operate in hiding, reportedly aligning with other terrorist groups proliferating the African continent . Thousands of children continue to live in a perpetual hell of abuse and exploitation. But Sam Childers refuses to give up the fight. His mission, rooted in both his faith and his fierce belief in justice, has always been clear: rescue the children , dismantle the infrastructure of war, and stop warlords in their tracks. “Sometimes we have to fight fire with fire,” Childers said. “I’m comfortable with that. God sent me here as one of his warriors.” A Journey of Transformation: From Biker to Preacher Sam Childers’ journey is one of profound personal transformation. Before becoming a pastor and humanitarian, he lived a very different life as a gang-affiliated biker in Pennsylvania, struggling with addiction and violence. It wasn’t until a life-altering conversion to Christianity in 1992 that Sam’s path changed. With his newfound faith, Sam felt a calling to do more, to serve a purpose bigger than himself. That purpose led him to the war-torn regions of East Africa in the late 1990s. Ignoring the warnings of seasoned aid workers, he threw himself into the chaos, determined to save children from war. In 2011, his story first captivated moviegoers in the Hollywood film Machine Gun Preacher , starring Gerard Butler. And now, “Never Stop – 25 Years a Missionary or a Mercenary” takes audiences deeper than ever before, showcasing the depth of Sam’s transformation and the immense personal sacrifices he has made in his quest to protect the world’s most vulnerable children. Just as importantly, it details the future of the mission. The Fight for Africa’s Children: A Mission That Never Stops Angels of East Africa has become a lifeline for children in the region. Through our orphanages and safe houses, the organization provides care, education and hope for children who have been victimized by criminal rebel fighters. In South Sudan, the organization’s Children’s Home in Nimule is home to around 185 children, offering them a sanctuary  where they can heal, learn and prepare for a better future. The new documentary shines a light on the ongoing trauma these children face. Many of the children rescued by Childers’ team bear the physical scars of their captivity — missing limbs, burns and other disfiguring injuries. But the emotional scars run deeper. Some children were forced to kill their own families, and the psychological impact of those atrocities continues to haunt them. “Of the hundreds of children we’ve saved, many of them still bear the scars of the worst mankind has to offer,” said Childers. “But we’re here to give them hope, to help them rebuild their lives. We won’t stop until every child is safe.” Never Stop: A Story That Must Be Told Directed by renowned filmmaker Kevin Evans , “Never Stop – 25 Years a Missionary or a Mercenary” takes a raw and unfiltered, unscripted look at the Machine Gun Preacher’s humanitarian heroism. From his daring rescues deep in enemy territory to the evolution of his life-saving tactics, the documentary brings audiences face-to-face with the tragedy of war and the extraordinary efforts required to make a difference . “Sam Childers is a force of nature,” said Evans. “His story exemplifies the profound impact a single person can have on the world. This documentary isn’t just about one man’s journey — it’s about the countless children who’ve been saved and many more who still need our help.” Machine Gun Preacher’s Call to Action: Join the Fight The release of Never Stop comes at a critical time. With conflict still plaguing the region, the need for support has never been greater. Proceeds from the documentary will directly support Angels of East Africa, helping us provide ongoing care and protection for our children. As the world witnesses this powerful new documentary, the Machine Gun Preacher has one simple message: the fight is far from over. “Joseph Kony’s reign of terror may persist, but our resolve to protect these children remains unshakeable,” Sam declared. “We will not rest until every child is safe and given the chance to rebuild their lives. With the release of Never Stop, I hope people around the world will join us in this fight.” Visit mgpneverstop.com  to watch the documentary and support the ongoing mission of Angels of East Africa. • Machine Gun Preacher Documentary: A Mission from God to Save Children from Brutal Warlords

For over 25 years, Sam Childers — known in most circles as the Machine Gun Preacher — has been on the front lines of one of the world’s most dangerous and tragic battles. His fight? To rescue children  from war-torn regions of East Africa. The new Machine Gun Preacher documentary further chronicles his journey of profound redemption from a violent, drug-peddling biker to a rifle-toting Christian missionary.  We’re so happy that the Machine Gun Preacher’s heroic tale has been captured like never in “ Never Stop – 25 Years a Missionary or a Mercenary ." But why should you care about Sam and his mission? It’s simple: the children. Rescuing Children from Hell on Earth: New Machine Gun Preacher Documentary Children in East Africa have faced unthinkable horrors under the reign of brutal warlords like Joseph Kony, leader of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) . Rebel forces are infamous for abducting children, forcing boys to become soldiers and subjecting girls to sexual slavery.  The atrocities committed against these children leave deep physical and emotional scars, and many will never fully recover. Sam Childers, through his nonprofit organization Angels of East Africa, has made it his life's work to save as many of these children as possible. The new Machine Gun Preacher documentary, released on Aug. 9, 2024, dives deep into Childers’ unwavering mission, showing never-before-seen footage of daring rescues, confrontations with militias, and the relentless pursuit of justice for the children he’s saved. A Man on a Mission from God Sam’s story is one of incredible transformation. Once a drug-addled member of a biker gang, his life changed when he found faith in 1992. That conversion led him to East Africa in the late 1990s, where he encountered the unimaginable cruelty inflicted upon children by rebel militias.  He couldn’t turn his back on the suffering. Instead of walking away, The Machine Gun Preacher picked up a rifle and started rescuing children, setting up orphanages , and giving them a second chance at life through education and vocational training . His work continues today, with Angels of East Africa caring for approximately 350 children across its facilities. But Sam’s mission isn’t just about rescue. It’s about redemption — both for the children he saves and for himself. His transformation from a man lost in violence to a warrior for peace, inspired by his Christian faith, is a testament to the power of belief and action. Why ‘Never Stop’ Matters This new Machine Gun Preacher documentary doesn’t merely rehash Sam's past. “Never Stop: 25 Years a Missionary or a Mercenary” explores a fight that continues to this day . While the worst of the guerrilla warfare is over, rebel militias continue in the underworld to threaten East African communities in Sudan, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The second front is mostly psychological. Rescuing children trapped in the horrors of warfare didn’t end after the guns fell silent. These children and teenagers must learn to survive and thrive with physical and emotional wounds that few in this world could comprehend. When you purchase and download the film , you can be inspired by an incredible story while also actively supporting the work of Angels of East Africa, helping fund their life-saving efforts. The proceeds from Never Stop go directly to the organization, enabling them to continue providing shelter, education and hope to hundreds of children.  A Call to Action: Download the New Machine Gun Preacher Documentary The new Machine Gun Preacher documentary itself is a call to action.
